Costa Rica defeated host and defending champion Guatemala 3-2 to win the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship on Sunday in Guatemala City. It was the Ticos’ first futsal title since 2000.

Jorge Arias opened the scoring in the 7th minute and completed his brace four minutes into the second half (24’), while Diego Zuniga (7’) added the other in a winning effort. Alan Aguilar (17’) and Edgar Santizo (27’) scored for Guatemala.

Miguel Lasso (1’, 30’, 43’) scored three goals to give Panama a 6-4 extra-time win over Mexico in the tournament’s third-place match, also on Sunday. With nine tallies, Lasso finished as the tournament’s leading scorer.

Claudio Goodridge (3’, 49’) and Carlos Perez (29’) also scored for the Panamanians, who finished third in the competition for the first time in its history. Mexico came back twice to tie the match, getting goals from Carlos Ramirez (19’, 29’), Angel Rodriguez (26’) and Morgan Plata (27’).

The doubleheader was played in front of a CONCACAF futsal record of 6,131 fans at the Domo Polideportivo.

By reaching the semifinals, all four teams qualified for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup to be played November 1-18 in Thailand.
